SUMMARY: As of June 2024, nearly 200 former juvenile detainees in Illinois are filing a lawsuit alleging widespread sexual abuse at the state’s youth centers over more than two decades.
The plaintiffs state that the abuse happened between 1997 and 2019 at eight facilities, including Chicago, Joliet, and St. Charles, with victims as young as 10 years old. The lawsuit claims both male and female staff members were involved and that the state failed to investigate abusers who used threats and rewards to keep their victims silent.
