The maker of the weedkiller Roundup is proposing to pay as much as $8 billion to settle lawsuits claiming the herbicide caused cancer, according to reports by Bloomberg. People familiar with the negotiations say the agreement could take months to work out, but that the company is willing to pay between $6 billion to $8 billion to settle current and future lawsuits.
People harmed by Roundup who have not yet filed a claim are encouraged to do so now as to not miss out on this possible global settlement. It is not yet clear how the settlement would compensate consumers who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer after using Roundup.
According to Bloomberg, attorneys fighting for plaintiffs want to see more than $10 billion handed over by Bayer to settle the more than 18,000 lawsuits currently pending across the country, as well as future cases yet to be filed.
Multi-Million-Dollar Verdicts Already Handed Down
Juries in California have already handed down multi-million- and multi-billion-dollar verdicts in Roundup lawsuits that have gone to trial. In August 2018, a school groundskeeper in California was awarded $289 million by a jury who found Roundup likely caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
A California couple was awarded over $2 billion in May 2019 by a jury who found their exposure to the weedkiller Roundup in their home garden likely caused them to develop cancer. It is the largest verdict to date in the ongoing Roundup litigation.
A third Roundup trial resulted in an $80 million verdict against Bayer in March.
Bayer Hurting from Roundup Fallout
Bayer’s possible $8 billion settlement comes after fallout from its acquisition of global seed and chemical giant Monsanto in 2016. Bayer bought Monsanto in a massive $66 billion deal right as Roundup lawsuits were beginning to mount against Monsanto.
According to reports, the deal has erased more than $30 billion in market value and prompted a shareholder vote of no confidence in Bayer’s management. Bayer is one of the largest pharmaceutical and chemical giants in the world.
The fallout is fueling talk of a breakup between Bayer and Monsanto just three years after the acquisition went through.
